For the non-Indians among you, we should explain that the phrase "blessings only" means that the bride and groom would prefer your happy blessings in lieu of any other wedding gifts. For those of you who would nonetheless wish to give an additional gift, we would like to suggest a couple of charitable organizations to which a donation might be made in honor of our wedding.

Akanksha

Akanksha is a non-profit organization based in India which runs approximately 65 after school education centers for underprivileged children in the greater Bombay area. At the centers, the children learn English, mathematics, and art; older children are also given assistance in pursuing further studies or vocational training. While she was in college in Bombay, Amrita volunteered with Akanksha. Subsequently, Doug has helped Akanksha to raise funds. All told, there is a rather long history between us and Akanksha.

If you are based in the U.S., you can donate to Akanksha by making out a cheque to "The Akanksha Fund Inc." and sending it to:

The Akanksha Fund Inc.
c/o Sarah Roberts
400 Central Park West, Apt. 17Y
New York, NY 10025

With your cheque you may enclose a note saying that the gift is in honor of the Ahuja-Marshall wedding. Akanksha will notify us by letter that you have made a donation.

Note: The Akanksha Fund is a U.S. 501c3 organization for tax purposes. Its EIN is 13-3976569. If you have any further questions, please e-mail sarahhroberts [aT] msn.com

If you are based outside the U.S., you may make a donation in any currency directly to the organization in India. For more information, see Akanksha's website on how to donate.

The Orangutan Conservancy

Somewhat more recently, Amrita and Doug have become interested in the conservation of the Great Apes, especially of the orangutans. Orangutans are fascinating and lovely beings worthy of protection and study. Unfortunately, their numbers are dwindling fast and their habitat is being destroyed by loggers and palm oil plantations. We have been looking for organizations which specialize in orangutan habitat conservation in Borneo and Sumatra, the last two natural homes of the orangutan. We believe the Orangutan Conservancy is in the best position to make a difference with respect to habitat.

To make a donation to the Orangutan Conservancy, make out a cheque to "The Orangutan Conservancy" and mail it to:

The Orangutan Conservancy
c/o Mica Sowards
P.O. Box 2113
Aptos, CA 95001-2113

With your cheque you may enclose a note saying that the gift is in honor of the Ahuja-Marshall wedding. The Orangutan Conservancy will notify us by letter that you have made a donation.

Note: The Orangutan Conservancy is a U.S. 501c3 organization for tax purposes. Its EIN is 84-1461579. If you have any questions, you may call Norm Rosen at 310.318.3778 or Mica Sowards at 970.879.9113.

For any further questions about Akanksha, the Orangutan Conservancy, or how to make charitable donations to these two organizations, you may also call Robert Carter at 713.651.8806. Thanks.
